Please give us a short summary of your website?
The website gives an overview of our services which are installing CCTV Systems and Simulated Occupancy systems for customers across the Northwest of the UK. In particular we are working in areas such as Manchester, Greater Manchester, Cheshire including Knutsford, Middlewich, Congleton and Holmes Chapel and Rochdale. We also offer a no obligation free home survey service.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I wanted a website that I could constantly update and modify in line with the development of the business.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I launched the website in September 2007
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I spent a lot of time thinking of a company name and website name. I wanted something abstract but something that would be memorable and had some meaningful connotations to what the business was about. The name Cactus is synonymous with security since it has its own self defence system so this seemed like a good option. I also noted that many successful companies had used animals or fruits for their name, e.g. Orange, Apple, Jaguar, Caterpillar etc but not many had used a name of a plant so this seemed to be a potential niche in terms of name creation.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
The website has a very clean structure, doesnt use overcomplicated flash and has a very modern theme that is different to many of the competitors whose sites seem to be over technical and out of date.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To use it as a lead generation tool for my business.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
The website is receiving a steady increase in the number of unique visits each month which is generating business for the company so at the moment the small amount of time I spend updating the site is of good value to the company.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would include some videos online and make the site more interactive but still concentrate on not letting the site be too complicated to use.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
We have a good team and are looking to grow quickly so I would welcome the challenge.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Some online directories who offer free lisitings repeatedly cold call you for you to upgrade to an enhanced listing. This is fair enough I suppose and I dont mind it provided that the sales people are not too pushy. I have had a sales person call me and by the end of the call he hung up on me and told me I was wasting his time quite rudely. Yet I had received the call from him and remained polite throughout.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Deciding on a company name and logo that took a long time to reach the final decision.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Submitting my site to online directories, including relevant image tags, ensuring that the page titles are also relevant and include keywords that search engines will recognise.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
Its been really enjoyable and much easire to edit once the main structure is there.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
The site has been up for 4 months and should be here to stay for a while
